Description:
The readers of women's magazine Jana have chosen Katarina Kresal, Liberal Democrats (LDS) president and Interior Minister of Slovenia, the Woman of the Year 2009.
A total of 13 women had been shortlisted for the award, all of which were received before the evening ceremony in Ljubljana by Parliament Speaker Pavel Gantar and Ljubljana Mayor Zoran Jankovic.
The organisers wrote on their webpage that many Slovenians would have deserved the award, handed out to those who have made a mark with their courage and determination.
Kresal said that she had never thought that an interior affairs minister could become the woman of the year.
She thinks that people are accepting her because she took on difficult issues, such as the issue of the erased. That proves that people truly value basic human rights and dignity.
