Description:
Skiers hit the slopes around the country this weekend as most of Slovenian ski resorts started the new skiing season. Despite starting later than usual, the ski industry is viewing the upcoming season with optimism as low temperatures finally arrived. All ski resorts are hoping to repeat the figures of the last year's season.
Slovenia's highest-lying skiing centre, Kanin (W), is meanwhile to open on 23 December, its slopes connected to the neighbouring Italian Sella Nevea ski resort.
Slovenia has 87 ski spots with a total of 300 kilometres of ski trails.
Several high-profile sport events take place at the Slovenian ski resorts, including World Cups in biathlon (Pokljuka), cross-country skiing (Rogla), alpine skiing (Pohorje and Kranjska Gora) and ski-flying (Planica).
