Description:
Slovenia, who lost to Russia, 2-1, in Moscow on Saturday, showed an outstanding performance yesterday in Maribor with 1-0 win. That gives to Slovenia a chance to present itself in a World Cup for the second time. After a great start and numerous opportunities by Slovenians, Zlatko Dedic's goal (only goal of the game), assisted by Valter Birsa, just minutes before a halftime was a relief. That left the aggregate score tied at 2-2 but Slovenia advanced to the World Cup on the basis of its away goal in Russia.
Russia had two players red-carded in the second half, first losing Alexander Kerzhakov in the 66th minute for a challenge on Slovenia keeper Samir Handanovic and then seeing winger Yuri Zhirkov ejected in the final minute. That gave Slovenia an advantage to keep the lead and they took it. Russians had only one real opportunity 5 minutes before the end when Zhirkov made a dangerous shot from the right side.
After the match, Slovenian Prime Minister Borut Pahor cleaned the players' shoes, as he promised if Slovenia qualify for WC, but he admits he didn't do a thorough job.
Yesterday's game was one of the greatest performences Slovenia has ever shown. With their spirit and teamwork they showed you don't have to be a star to beat one of the best teams in the world.
