Slovenia Looking to Advance on Win Over US

18 June 2010

Description:

Slovenia will seek to secure a berth in the elimination phase of the World Cup with a win over the US in today's group C clash at Ellis Park in Johannesburg.

While the US come into the match as slight favourites, being ranked 11 places above Slovenia on FIFA's world rankings (14th vs 25th), Slovenia are brimming with confidence after their historic 1:0 win over Algeria in the opening match that gave them the lead in the group.

While Slovenian players have said the aim will be victory, defender Miso Brecko admitted on Thursday that a draw would not go down too negatively with the team. "It would be better to win one point than none at all. A draw would be ok, but we'll do everything to win."

Most pundits have predicted a close-fought match, with both teams playing a similar style of game. The key to victory will likely lie in the ability of the midfield of one of the teams building a possession advantage over their opponents.

Slovenia will have an additional reason to impress, as President Danilo Türk will make the journey to South Africa to watch the match. In addition to Tuerk, around 1,000 Slovenian football fans are expected to fill the stands of Ellis Park.

And here is a little bit of fun from Late Show with David Letterman:)
