Description:
Newspaper publisher Delo conferred late on Tuesday the EUR 5,000 Kresnik Prize for the best novel of the year to Goran Vojnovic for his notorious novel about immigrants from former Yugoslav republics "Cefurji Raus", for which he had already received the Preseren Fund Prize.
The young author, who is also a film and television director, has had a successful year. Apart form the literary awards he received for his work, a play based on the novel has been a huge success as well.
"Cefurji Raus" has raised a lot of dust due to some negative statements about the police made by the main character in the novel. The police also questioned Vojnovic as part of an investigation launched against him late last year, which sparked appall in Slovenian literary circles.
The author, who has also been referred to as Slovenia's Hanif Kureishi and Zadie Smith convinced the jury with his sincerity and frankness. The book, which was described as "outrageously funny", was chosen unanimously out of 111 novels.
"Cefurji Raus" is a novel about immigrants from former Yugoslav republics and their children (Cefur is a derogative term for Bosnians and Serbians living in Slovenia). One of its characters, Marko, is in trouble with the police, so he does not think highly of them.
