Description:
Tržič is a town and municipality in northern Slovenia near the Austrian border (Loibl Pass). The first settlement was founded near the road which connected Roman city of Emona with Virunum in nowadays Carinthia. After the landslide, caused by the earthquake, the original settlement was destroyed and many people moved down the valley to establish a new settlement, namen Neumarktl where Tržič is now located (these events are the base of the legend about the origin of Tržič). The town was granted market rights in 1492 which caused further development of the town. The great fire in 1811 when the buildings on the left bank of Tržiška Bistrica river was destroyed, changed the town. After the buildings were rebuilt they needed to have firewalls, iron door and window covers, a very rare feature in the Europe. The town center of Tržič has been protected as the cultural heritage since 1985.
As of 2007 it has a population of 15,851 inhabitants. Much of the town's architecture was constructed in the Classicist style. The leather, wood and textile industry were important to the economy of Tržič in the past but the industry declined after the breakup of SFR Yugoslavia. The development of small business after this period is now important branch of economy. Because of its alpine setting, alpine skiing is popular in the surrounding area. Tržič was the home town of Countess Francisca von Strassoldo Grafenberg, wife of the famous Austrian general Joseph Radetzky.
The explicit alpine climate that prevails in the community is shown in nicely fresh summer evenings whereas snow remains in mountains by late spring time offering ideal conditions for winter sports. Tržič is located in the mountains and his height above sea level is 515 m . In the summer the average temperature is 17 °C and the average winter temperature is -4 °C. With its woods and mountainous meadows as well as with its rich natural and cultural heritage the Tržič community is attractive for anyone longing for a quiet moment among natural beauties, enjoying it either during a long trip or a short excursion. Friendly staff in nearby restaurants and taverns will warmly welcome you after trips around Tržič.
