Description:
The geographical position and verdant landscape of Krsko favours the development of agriculture and tourism. The hillside slopes of the Krsko Basin have been transformed into fertile vineyards and apple, pear, peach, apricot, and plum orchards. The local Cvicek wine is famous-a light, refreshing red wine suitable for every dish and occasion. The selection of other grape varieties is wide, and high quality wines such as Laski Rizling, Modra Frankinja, the white and red Sremican, and predicate wines that have won awards at national and international wine fairs are matured in numerous wine cellars.
Places to visit:At the foot of the Gorjanci mountain range, lies the beautiful Kostanjevica Cave. The Krakovo forest is the only virgin forest in Slovenia where English oak (Quercus robur) grows and is a habitat for several rare and endangered animal species. The diversity of the landscape, its natural assets, and ancient culture have inspired numerous folk customs. The festivals of Pust (around Shrove Tuesday), St. George's Day, the grape harvest and the Cvicek wine festivals, Martinmas, corn husking, the cherry and chestnut festivals, Midsummer's Night, and the St. Nicholas Eve holiday are celebrations that not only serve as entertainment but also link us with the heritage of the past. On summer evenings, various open-air cultural events are organized such as Summer at Rajhenburg Castle along with musical events in the larger towns. The best-known local musicians are the Videm Wind Orchestra with their many successful national and international appearances and the Krsko Music School and Big Band with their now traditional Big Band Festival.
Activities:There are many possibilities for recreation and relaxation, and many sporting events take place regularly. Fishing in the ponds near Brestanica is a unique experience. The calm blue-green Krka River offers not only fishing but also boating and swimming. The menus in local restaurants and on tourist farms are extremely varied and include attractive local dishes such as duck with homemade mlinci (flat cakes), Martin's goose, and delicious homemade sausages and bread
In the old town are many historical buildings, the churches of St. John and of the Holy Spirit, and the Capuchin convent. On a hill west to the town is the medieval castle, enlarged in the 15th century by Duke Frederick IV of Austria. It also has the only nucleur power plant in Slovenia.
