For driving in Slovenia you are required to have a valid driver license for the category of vehicle you are driving. In Slovenia driving is on the right side . All passengers have to sit in adequate seats during travel and wear seatbelts. You also have to use dimmed lights all the time. Helmets are obligatory for motorbikes riders and co riders. Use of fog lights is allowed with the conditions of lessening visibility to more than 50 percent.Road rules
The traffic signs adhere to the Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals.
* Vehicles drive on the right hand side of the road
* Vehicles entering a roundabout have right of way
* School buses and public transport have right of way when they are leaving a public stop
* It is illegal to drive on bus lines
* Motor vehicles are required to stop to let passengers on and off buses
* Use of the horn is permitted only in cases of immediate and extreme danger
* Speed limits are strict and radar traps are often set up to catch speeding motorists
* Headlights must be used at all times, by law
* On mountain roads, ascending vehicles have priority
Required documents
Foreign drivers need valid drivers license, car registration and insurance, for the vehicle being driven. Drivers outside EU also need green card, while green card for EU drivers is suggested.
Vignettes (Toll Stickers)
Since 1 July 2008, motorcycles, cars and vans not exceeding 3.5 tonnes are required to display a vignette (toll sticker) in order to use motorways and express roads in the Republic of Slovenia and the Ljubljana bypass. Vignettes can be purchased at petrol stations in Slovenia and neighbouring countries, at offices of the national motoring organisation and foreign motoring organisations. Not having a vignette is punishable by a fine of between 300 and 800 euros.
As of 1 July 2009 the six-month vignette remains in use only for motorcycles.
Trucks and buses weighing more than 3,5 tones are still paying with conventional toll payment methods (cash, debit card, credit card).
Vignette prices:
- Annual vignette for motor vehicles up to a maximum permitted weight of 3,500 kg EUR 95 €
- Monthly vignette for motor vehicles up to a maximum permitted weight of 3,500 kg EUR 30 €
- Weekly vignette for motor vehicles up to a maximum permitted weight of 3,500 kg EUR 15 €
- Annual vignette for motorcycles 47.50 €
- Six-month vignette for motorcycles 25.00 €
- Weekly vignette for motorcycles 7.50 €
The General Speed Limits are:
- urban areas 50 km/h (buses 50 kmh)
- regional roads 90 km/h (buses 80 km/h)
- main highways 100 km/h (buses 80 km/h)
- expressways 130 km/h (buses 80 km/h)
Alchocol level in blood
You can have 0,5 g of alchocol per 1 kg of blood, under conditions that you show no changes in behaviour. That applies for drivers of A and B categories.
