Description:
Šentjur is a Slovenian municipality located near the city of Celje. Its name means "Saint George" and it is named after the legendary dragonslayer Saint George. An image of the dragon being slayed is prominent on the city's coat of arms. ŠENTJUR is 11 km from Celje, 4 km to the junction to the Dramlje motorway, and there one finds the larger tourist thermal spas: Rogaška Slatina and Podčetrtek. Šentjur was first mentioned in 1340, when the town started to develop around the original Church of St. George (Sveti Jurij), otherwise the remains of human culture reach back to the early Stone Age (Neolithic).
Šentjur is located beside a river in the countryside and his height above sea level is 240 m.
In the summer the average temperature is 20,5 °C and the average winter temperature is 1,8 °C.
Points of distinction : The old city center - the upper square has been known since 1340 and had developed adjoining the parish church of St George, build in 1721. Upper square represent a monument of exceptional cultural importance, of particural interest is the restored house in which the composers Ipavec were born. The building houses the museum, a wedding hall, protocolar rooms with areas for organised events and a wine vault. Outside in the courtyard, under the lime tree, stand a fontain designed by architect Plečnik.

On Rifnik Hill, which rises proudly above the Šentjur Valley, there is an archaeological park with the restored foundations of two Old Christian churches, seven houses and defence walls with guard houses; in a reconstructed pre-historic house there is a display of recovered items.
