Description:

Ravne na Koroškem (German: Gutenstein) is a town and a municipality in northern Slovenia. Until 1918, the town was part of the Duchy of Carinthia. It is the largest town in the traditional Slovenian province of Carinthia). Its Slovene name means Ravne in Carinthia, in order to distinguish it from other places with the same name. Until 1952, it was known as Guštanj. It was granted town status in 1952. The area has a 380 year long history of steel industry. The Parish Church in the settlement is dedicated to Saint Giles and belongs to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Maribor. It is first mentioned in written documents dating to 1331. It was re-vaulted in the 17th century.

RAVNE CASTLE

Ravne Castle stands on a pebbled terrace above the town centre and is about 500 years old. Today the castle presents a neo-Baroque appearance – due to the last refurbishment in the 19th century – however its architecture is disunited as a result of the many additions made from late Gothic times to today. The last complete renovation was carried out with total adherence to the requirements for the protection of cultural heritage, while at the same time ensuring functional spaces for the work of the Dr. Franc Sušnik Library, which has been housed in the castle since 1949. Within the castle walls there is a wealth of artistic heritage – the result of the art camps, which were held in the Art gallery's salon premises from the year 1969.  The gallery holds regular displays of artworks and presents alternative programs under the patronage of the Ravne museum, which has permanent collections depicting the history of the area and the Mežica Valley. There is also a rich collection of small plastic arts pieces.

Partizanska hospital Mirta

In the Rožankov forest at Podgora on the eastern side of Uršlja gora, stands a wooden building – the once, Mirta hospital. Due to its dilapidation the building was reconstructed, first in 1975 and later in 1980. In the summer of 1944 Rožank's son, Fika, built a temporary partisan hospital in a system of earth cabins. There, his sister Mirta was also tended to, and hence the hospital's name. Up until the end of the war many partisans from near and far were cared for there.
